New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday said a caste-based census is a sensitive issue and there is difference of opinion on it – even within the political parties.

Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told IANS that a group of ministers, headed by the senior-most minister, would take a decision on the matter.

‘Different parties have different views on the issue and there is difference of opinion even within the parties. It is a sensitive issue. The group of ministers will be headed by the senior-most minister to decide on it,’ Ahmed told IANS.

Asked whether the party was in favour of caste-based census or against it, Ahmed said there was a need to forge a consensus as there were different views on the issue.

He added that a caste-based census was last conducted in 1931.

In an obvious attempt to buy time, the highly-emotive demand of political parties for conducting a caste-based census was Wednesday referred by the cabinet to a group of ministers for a decision.
