Kolkata, June 3 (IANS) Trinamool Congress would request the Election Commission to advance the West Bengal assembly polls to October, party chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said Thursday.

Addressing journalists a day after her party came up with an impressive performance in the civic polls, Banerjee said early elections were needed as the state did not have a ‘functioning government’ now.

‘I don’t favour imposition of president’s rule or dismissal of the state government, though I am in favour of early election,’ Banerjee said.

‘I will appeal to the Election Commission to hold assembly polls in October alongside those in Bihar,’ she said.

The Trinamool chief said expert committees comprising intellectuals and persons of eminence in their chosen fields will be formed in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the neighbouring Bidhannagar municipality to run the civic affairs.

The Trinamool wrested the two civic bodies from the state’s ruling Left Front with a massive mandate.

On Sunday, the Trinamool councillors would meet to elect their leader.
