Bogota, June 8 (IANS/EFE) The Colombian Army has rescued a woman kidnapped by leftist guerrillas in the country’s northeastern Saravena city a week ago.

The woman was rescued when the vehicle in which the rebels were carrying her was stopped at a military checkpost Monday in Caname city of Arauca province. The insurgents were arrested.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) had kidnapped her for ransom, an official said.

The woman’s family told officials that the group was demanding one billion pesos (about $505,000) for her release.
