Lucknow, June 17 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi Thursday demanded a parliament session be convened immediately to discuss the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and a probe to know why then Union Carbide Corp CEO Warren Anderson was not put on trial.

‘It requires a thorough probe… It should come out why the case filed against Anderson in a US court did not come to trial. It is to be noted that laws in US in such cases are more stringent than those in our country,’ Joshi told reporters here.

He alleged that this ‘reflects the soft attitude of the erstwhile central government, which was of the Congress’. ‘Since beginning the Congress government has been trying to protect Anderson and acting under US pressure to save him,’ he said, adding only ‘a through probe could unlock the mystery related to the case’.

‘The role of the then chief justice (of India) should also be probed. It should be enquired whether the chief justice was given an important post in any international organistaion following the first judgment of the supreme court in the case,’ he said.

Joshi said it was still not known whether the gas plant installed by the Union Carbide Corp in Bhopal was an old one. ‘I appeal to the citizens of the country that they should continue to take up the issue to know the answer of such secret questions,’ he said.
