Chandigarh, June 29 (IANS) Rithoj village in Haryana’s Gurgaon district has kept its 35-year-old political tradition alive. It Tuesday elected the whole panchayat (village council) unopposed, yet again. The only change this time is that the head is a woman.

Residents of the Gujjar-dominated village have been electing their panchayat unopposed since 1975 – a record for 35 years.

Though there were 18 candidates in the fray for the sarpanch’s post till Monday, 17 of them withdrew their candidature to pave the way for Santosh to be elected unopposed.

The village falls in the Sohna block of Gurgaon district, 25 km from national capital New Delhi.

Panchayat, panchayat samitis (local councils) and zila parishad (district council) elections in some districts of Haryana are scheduled to be held July 6 and 10.

For the 10 seats of zila parishad members, 65 women are in the fray – out-numbering the 52 men who are in the contest.
