New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) The government Tuesday decided to extend its ceasefire agreement with a rebel group in Assam for another six months.
‘It has been decided and mutually agreed to extend the suspension of operations agreement with the United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) in Assam for a further period of six months,’ a home ministry official said.
The UPDS, formed in March 1999, signed a ceasefire agreement with the central government May 23, 2002. The agreement is renewed every six months.
This led to a split in the outfit with one faction deciding to continue with its militant activities while the other commenced negotiations with the government.
The talks have been inconclusive so far but the government said the parleys on the demands of UPDS would continue.
