Dhaka, Aug 5 (IANS) Four senior members of the students wing of Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, have been arrested on charges of having links with banned militant outfits.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) nabbed four current and former Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders Wednesday, alleging that they were collecting arms and explosives from outlawed organisations for subversive activities, New Age newspaper said Thursday.
Those arrested were Alamgir Hossain alias Raju, Mohammad Imran alias Masum, Abdullah Jayed Bin Sabid and Sultan Mahmud alias Ripon.
Shotguns, explosives and Islamic literature was seized from their hideouts in Dhaka and Ghazipur district.
‘Their task was to collect arms and ammunition from different sources and to carry out violence during processions and rallies,’ said Commander Mohammad Sohail, director of RAB legal and media wing.
Shibir is the student wing of JeI, whose top leaders are being tried on charges of targeting civilians during the 1971 freedom movement.
Media reports say the RAB and the police are arresting JeI activists and members of their front organizations who have protested against the arrest of top party leaders.
The JeI had opposed the freedom movement that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh.
