New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya has alleged that infected foodgrains were being supplied to poor people and tribals through ration shops in Mumbai and Thane.
Somaiya, a national secretary of the BJP, said in a statement that he visited a Food Corporation of India (FCI) warehouse in Borivli, Mumbai, along with some party leaders and found ‘dead rats and rotten, infected foodgrains’ in the storage facility.
‘These foodgrains are being supplied to poor and common people as well as tribals through ration shops in Mumbai and in the Adivasi (tribal) belt of Thane,’ Somaiya said.
The BJP leader said his visit was part of efforts by the party to expose ‘FCI’s rotten wheat scam’ and to show the ‘gross negligence and corruption in food management by the UPA-led Congress government’.
He claimed that the ‘rotten and infected wheat’ found in the warehouse was being supplied to ration shops for distribution to poor people under the Antyodaya and Annapurna schemes.
