New Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) The government is taking ‘major steps to eradicate corruption’, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan said Wednesday.

Admitting that a Hong Kong based consultancy had ranked Indian bureaucracy the least efficient among 12 Asian countries, the minister told the Lok Sabha that the government also wanted to provide greater transparency and accountability as well as to reform bureaucracy.

Some of the measures taken in this regard include the enactment of the Right to Information Act, the issue of Whistle Blowers Resolution, introduction of e-governance and simplification of procedures.

The minister was responding to N. Chaluvaraya Swamy and four others who asked if the Hong Kong based Political and Economic Risk Consultancy had ranked Indian bureaucrats one of the most corrupt in the world.
