Moscow, Aug 17 (IANS) Afghanistan plans to buy modern weapons from Russia, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
‘Afghanistan definitely needs powerful national armed forces for the purpose of protecting its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,’ the country’s charge d’affaires in Russia Hafizullah Ebadi said.
He added that the country has a right to turn to any country to meet its needs.
However, the diplomat said no deals were expected to be signed at the upcoming meeting between Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Russia’s southern city of Sochi.
The leaders of Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan will hold talks Wednesday.
