Chandigarh, Aug 24 (IANS) The Haryana state election commission has directed the state government to initiate disciplinary action against officials who did not attend their duties during the publication of voters’ lists in Gurgaon district last week.

Chief Electoral Officer Sumita Misra Tuesday said that a surprise check was made Aug 21-22 to check if designated officers were present at the places of publication.

She said the officials’ absence revealed that they derelicted their duty during the revision of electoral rolls, which is a constitutional responsibility.

Misra said they were found absent in a surprise check conducted at some of the polling stations in four constituencies in Gurgaon district.

The poll officer has directed the Gurgaon deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer to file first information reports (FIRs) under the Representation of People Act and initiate action against the errant officials.

On the directions of the Election Commission of India, the preliminary voters list of all the four assembly constituencies of Gurgaon district, namely Pataudi, Badshahpur, Gurgaon and Sohna were published Aug 17.

The officials were required to be present during the exercise for revision of the electoral rolls.
