New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Monday appealed to the residents of the capital to clean their surroundings and sought their cooperation in readying the city to host the Commonwealth Games Oct 3-14.

In a message, she said as hosts, Delhi expects many guests during the important event and announced that a ‘Clean Drive Delhi’ will be launched Sep 6-12 covering roads leading to the Games venues, strategic locations in its vicinity and important tourist spots.

‘Let us clean our surroundings to receive them (visitors and athletes),’ Dikshit appealed to people of the capital.

She said that it is an ambitious gesture and most important to make the guests feel ‘welcomed’.

Later, at a function, she announced that people can use Games mascot ‘Shera’ for decorative purpose.

Earlier, Delhiites were urged by the Delhi government Aug 24 to spruce up their houses and their surroundings ahead of the Games to make the city look ‘clean and attractive’.

Backing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s appeal to treat the Games as a festival, Delhi’s Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia had said people should give due emphasis on cleaning, white-washing and painting their homes.
