New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Tuesday blamed the incessant rains in the city for its failure to meet the Aug 31 deadline for completing all Commonwealth Games related projects. The Games are just 33 days away.
When IANS contacted senior officials and contractors involved with the Games projects, they claimed that 80 percent of work is over. They said that incessant rains interrupted the Games work, so the deadline had to be extended.
‘Almost all the projects are over. The incessant rains this month (August) delayed the work. But all the projects will be completed by September. Among the upgradation work, the work in Karol Bagh zone is lagging behind as agencies like BSES and North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) are working there,’ Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney told IANS.
The latest status report on the Games projects given to the central government indicates that the MCD’s widening of roads is 80 percent complete, street lighting 82 percent, beautification of flyovers 60 percent, and upgradation of toilets a mere 30 percent.
About removal of debris, Sawhney said clearance of the remaining debris is a ‘continuous process’ and so far about 90,000 tonnes of debris has been removed from across the city.
He also said: ‘The MCD jurisdiction is continuously involved in the cleaning of debris and we are giving strict instructions to the contractors to clear the debris on a day-to-day basis. By September first week, 70 percent of the debris will be cleared from the city roads.’
