New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) Three firms have been engaged to remove the estimated over 160,000 kg of waste daily from the Commonwealth Games venues from Aug 1 to Oct 30, officials of the Organising Committee said Tuesday.
‘To deal with an estimated 163,200 kg of waste per day, three cleaning vendors, at a cost of Rs.21 crore have been engaged for primary collection of waste across venues,’ said A.K. Chaturvedi, deputy director general, cleaning and waste management.
‘ISS, Sarvatra and A2Z Maintenance and Engineering Services have been selected through a global open tender process. The contract is for the period from Aug 1 to Oct 30,’ he added.
The ISS will look after the main press centre and international broadcasting centre at the India Trade Promotion Organisation (Pragati Maidan), while Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Aquatics Complex and the Talkatora Indoor Stadium will be cleaned by Sarvatra. All the other venues will be dealt by A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services, Chaturvedi said.
The service providers will arrange the requisite consumables and bins for primary collection and move them to the Waste Compound at each venue.
‘The municipal agencies, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), are responsible for secondary collection from the waste compounds for disposal’.
Furthermore, 11 waste compounds have been identified at all venues with the association of NDMC, MCD and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Also, a total of 1,100 waste bins have been provided by the municipal agencies, Chaturvedi said.
As many as 51 officials have been deployed for cleaning and waste management.
‘Five of these people will be deployed at the OC headquarters and the rest at different venues, to ensure planning and coordination with the relevant civic agencies,’ Chaturvedi said.
