London, May 8 (Inditop) The British town of Swindon is to doff its cap to an Indian orphan 12 years after he was found abandoned in a basket in Delhi.
Ali McCallum, who was left in a basket outside the Delhi Council for Child Welfare home, Palna, as a four-day-old baby, is now an admired fundraiser for orphanages.
Ali, who suffered from pneumonia and typhoid as a baby, was brought to the southwestern town of Swindon by his adoptive parents Neil and Kauser McCallum.
Determined to help others such as him, Ali has raised 3,000 pounds over the last three years and another thousand pounds last month, which will go to Palna.
Now, Ali is to receive the first Pride of Swindon Award to be presented by Mayor Steve Wakefield May 14, town authorities said.
Ali said his mission began when he returned to India to visit Palna in 2006 with his family.
“I wanted to go and see where I started life. The staff told me that they were doing really well but always need money for better care. So I decided to help. It’s my way of helping a few children have a better life,” said Ali.
