Panaji, Nov 4 (IANS) Fake Indian currency printed in Pakistan has made inroads into Goa, a police official said Thursday in the wake of Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) directive to take corrective steps.
The RBI has informed Goa Police of several counterfeit notes being received by banks located in the state, a spokesperson for the economic offences cell said.
He said the fake notes caught in Goa were printed in Pakistan.
‘They are not printed in Goa. Usually they are printed in Pakistan and come to Goa via Nepal, Bangladesh and West Bengal,’ Satish Padwalkar, police subinspector in the economic offence cell, told reporters.
‘We are holding regular meetings with bank officials on the issue. You will find one or two such notes sometimes, but we cannot book holders of notes in such meagre quantity,’ Padwalkar said.
Police were pushing traders to use ultra violet ray machines to detect fake notes in areas frequented by tourists, he said.
‘Many counterfeit notes have been tracked back to wads of notes issued by the State Bank of India and Canara Bank, among others,’ he said.
