New Delhi, Dec 2 (IANS) The government Thursday deposited in the Supreme Court the original taped recordings of the conversations of corporate lobbyist Nira Radia and others relating to the 2G spectrum allocation.
Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium handed over the sealed computer hard disk, server and call records to the apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice A.K. Ganguly.
As Subramanium handed over the packed material, the court, in a lighter vein, observed that the sealed packet was like a ‘Christmas gift’.
The tapes were handed over to the apex court in pursuance of its order Wednesday directing the central government that all the original recordings of the conversations of Radia and others be deposited with the court.
The court directed the government to deposit the original recordings after making copies.
The court’s direction on keeping the original recordings in safe custody came in the wake of senior counsel Prashant Bhushan expressing apprehension that the tapes may go missing.
The apex court asked Subramanium to take instructions from the government to address the apprehensions expressed by Bhushan, appearing for petitioner Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL).
The petitioner is seeking court monitoring of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigations into the spectrum allocation scandal that is assessed to have cost the exchequer huge sums of money.
