Srinagar, Dec 29 (IANS) The Kashmir Valley witnessed the first snowfall of the season Wednesday evening, breaking the over two-month long cold dry spell.

While a mild snowfall mixed with rain lashed summer capital Srinagar and other places in the lower reaches of the valley, higher reaches like Gulmarg and Pahalgam reported a steady moderate snowfall.

The weather office predicted light snowfall in the plains and a moderate snowfall in the mountains of the valley till Thursday evening.

‘The western disturbance persists over the valley this time and we can have light snowfall in the plains during the next 24 hours,’ said Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office here.

People in Srinagar city were visibly delighted to see the small flakes of snow.

‘It is a great relief. We always look forward to snowfall during the winter. Besides, it will also replenish the water reservoirs of the valley which sustain our drinking water resources for the year,’ said Bashir Ahmad War, 58, a retired veterinarian.
