Kolkata, Jan 2 (IANS) The Sports Journalists’ Federation of India (SJFI) Sunday condoled the death of noted sports journalist Pradeep Vijayakar in Mumbai.

Calling Vijaykar a writer ‘par excellence’, SJFI president S. Sabanayakan said, ‘Vijayakar, who was popular with young sports writers, was knowledgeable and committed to the profession.’

‘A writer par excellence, Vijayakar had the ability to tackle any sport with ease,’ Sabanayakan said in his condolence message.

Vijayakar, 59, died Saturday evening after batlling cancer. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Sabanayakan said Vijayakar was a class cricketer, who had played alongside some of the legends of Indian cricket from Mumbai.

‘Belonging to a generation of sports journalists who believed in being at the ground from the first ball, Vijayakar’s reportage made compelling reading.

‘His demise has taken away not only one of the finest sports journalists but a great human being,’ the SJFI president said.
