Agra, Jan 2 (IANS) The Uttar Pradesh forest department has suggested developing 33 ponds along the Delhi-Agra national highway to provide water to wild animals, an official said.
‘These new water holes will ensure that the wild animals between Badarpur and Agra do not cross the road and get killed. Normally animals move in search of water or food and seasonally for mating,’ Divisional In-charge of Social Forestry and Wildlife N.K. Janoo told IANS.
He said the National Highway Authority of India had been told about the need for these ponds.
‘This basic need of the animals must be factored in all future road building projects,’ Janoo said.
If properly maintained, the ponds could also be developed as tourist spots. Janoo said he was not aware if this experiment had been tried anywhere in India.
‘But surely a large number of animal casualties could be prevented if this need was taken care of,’ Janoo said.
