Shimla, Jan 3 (IANS) The 16,000-strong Himachal Pradesh police force Monday switched to a trendy blue new dress in place of the traditional khaki uniform, a top police official said here.

‘All cops will now wear the new uniform. It will give a new identity to the police force and will even help shed their brutal image,’ Director General of Police D.S. Manhas told reporters Monday.

The new uniform includes dark blue trousers, light blue shirt and blue beret. Accessories such as shoes and belts will remain black. Both policemen and policewomen will wear the same uniform, he said.

Officers of the Himachal Police Services (HPS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre for the state will also wear the new uniform.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal had in June 2008 given the green signal to change the police uniform. The new dress was also displayed at the Republic Day parade at the historic Ridge here in 2008.

The Himachal Pradesh police are probably the third police force in the country to replace the old khaki uniform. The other states are West Bengal and Goa.
