Tokyo, March 1 (DPA) The Tokyo Sky Tree, Japan’s new skyscraper under construction for digital terrestrial broadcasting, became the world’s tallest tower Tuesday, topping the 600-metre mark, the operator said.
The tower in central Tokyo surpassed the height of China’s Canton Tower, a 600-metre TV and sightseeing tower, the Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co said.
The Sky Tree is scheduled to reach 634 metres when construction is completed at the end of 2011.
The broadcasting tower begun in July 2008 is already drawing an increasing number of tourists well before its official opening in spring 2012.
