Kanpur, June 6 (Inditop) The death of a student sparked off violence and tension in a university campaus here as agitated students set vehicles ablaze and fought a pitched battle with police, officials said Saturday.

Students of the Chandra Shekhar Azad Agriculture University (CSAAU) took to the streets Saturday morning, alleging Sunil Yadav, who fell ill Friday, died due to delay by the varsity authorities in calling an ambulance.

The students torched vehicles parked inside the residences of the vice-chancellor and the dean, after which police used force to disperse them.

“The situation is tense, but under control,” Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kanpur range, H.R. Sharma told reporters in the city.

Sensing more trouble on the campus, the varsity authorities have asked the police to get the hostels vacated.

“Majority of the hostels have been vacated, following the directives by the university administration,” said Sharma.

Police have been deployed in and around the campus as a preventive measure, he added.
