New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) The Congress is expected to announce its first list of candidates for next year’s Uttar Pradesh assembly polls by the end of this month, a senior leader said here.
Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said Monday that some names of party candidates were expected to be released by the end of this month.
He said that the party’s election committee for Uttar Pradesh is expected to be announced soon.
The All India Congress Committeee (AICC) leader said party president Sonia Gandhi will address the concluding session of a meeting of the state Congress committee delegates in Varanasi in May.
He said party leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to address the inaugural session of the two-day meeting.
The party is increasing momentum of its preparations for the assembly polls with rallies by senior leaders.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi had addressed a meeting in Bundelkhand April 30.
Digvijay Singh denied that the party had sought the support of the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party in the meeting of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to vote out the draft report on 2G spectrum.
He said the two parties had taken their own decision to reject the report in the 21-member committee.
The report was rejected by 11 members of the Congress, the DMK, SP and the BSP after committee chairman Murli Manohar Joshi of the Bharatiya Janata Party adjourned the meeting Thursday.
Digvijay Singh also denied that the party’s joining hands with the BSP and the SP to reject the report will have impact on its campaign in Uttar Pradesh.
‘No one has asked me not to attack the BSP,’ Singh said.
Uttar Pradesh is expected to go for assembly polls in less than a year.
