Moscow, May 3 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A total of 100 journalists were killed in 2010 while performing their professional duties, the International Press Institute (IPI) said Monday.

The 2010 toll is lower than in 2009, when 110 journalists were killed around the world, the Vienna-based media watchdog said in its annual World Press Freedom Review.

Asia, where 40 reporters were killed last year, tops the list of the most dangerous regions for journalists, followed by Latin America, where the death toll stood at 32, the report said.

Pakistan, where 16 reporters had been killed, was named the most lethal country for journalists.

Fifteen reporters died in sub-Saharan Africa last year and eight were killed in the Middle East and North Africa, the report said.

In Europe, seven journalists were killed, including two in Russia and one each in Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece, Latvia and Turkey, it said.
