Washington, June 21 (inditop.com) US President Barack Obama called Saturday for the Iranian government to halt violent repression of protests and said that the US supported demonstrators who were exercising their universal rights to free expression.
“The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching,” Obama said. “We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people.”
His comments came as Iranians – in defiance of a government order – thronged the streets of Tehran to protest irregularities in the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
“The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights,” Obama said.
