Chandigarh, May 29 (IANS) Haryana school students who participate and excel in sporting disciplines will earn points for use in their annual assessment, a minister said Sunday.

Haryana Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal said that to promote sports along with education, the government had made a provision to give up to 16 extra points to students participating in cultural and sports activities.

‘As many as four extra points would be given to those who would participate in school- level tournaments, eight points for block level, 12 points for district level and 16 points for state level,’ Bhukkal said in a statement here.

She said that sports infrastructure was being strengthened in schools and the government had launched a talent hunt at the grassroots level.

She added that a sports calendar was released for schools to enable students to compete in various events.

Sportspersons from Haryana, like boxing champion Vijender Singh and others, have brought laurels to the country in various sporting events, especially in the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

A majority of the medals in both the events were won for the country by those from Haryana.
