Sydney, May 30 (IANS) A majority of Australians support the government’s plan to introduce cigarette packets with plain packaging, according to a survey.
The Newspoll telephone survey commissioned by the Cancer Council found that out of 1,200 people, 59 percent approved of the federal government’s push for plain cigarette packets.
Only 24 percent of respondents disapproved of the measure, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported.
Cancer Council spokeswoman Caroline Miller said plain cigarette packets were backed by the public.
‘The evidence is there, the community support is there and the desperate campaign being waged by the tobacco industry is further indication that it should work,’ she said.
The Labor party wants to introduce plain packaging for all cigarettes from 2012 but the opposition is yet to declare whether it would support the move.
