London, June 30 (IANS) Nuclear reactors at a plant in Scotland have been hit by a school of jellyfish, a media report said.
A large influx of jellyfish from the North Sea have clogged filters in the water cooling system at the Torness nuclear power station, Sky News reported.
The plant at East Lothian near Edinburgh uses seawater to cool the reactors and the jellyfish were sucked in during the process and obstructed the filters, it said.
Plant operators said the reactors have been shut down as a precaution and there was no danger to the public.
‘At no time was there any danger to the public. There are no radiological aspects with this event and there has been no impact to the environment,’ a spokesperson said.
Workers at the plant have begun clearing the jellyfish.
It was, however, unclear why there was a sudden surge in jellyfish in the sea near the plant.
