Mumbai, June 30 (IANS) Being only the third Indian to be elected as president of humanitarian service organisation Rotary International, Gujarat-based businessman Kalyan Banerjee will assume office Friday, a statement said here.

Banerjee is the director of agro-chemical manufacturer United Phosphorus Limited and chairman of United Phosphorus (Bangladesh) Limited, the statement said Thursday.

‘During his tenure as president till June 30, 2012, Banerjee will lead a global network of 1.2 million business and professional leaders from more than 200 countries and geographical regions who, through volunteer service, help meet the needs of communities worldwide,’ the statement said.

Banerjee will oversee Rotary’s top priority of eradicating polio that still threatens children in Africa and Asia – including India.
