Dhaka, July 2 (IANS) Dhaka University, one of the oldest institutions for higher education in Bangladesh, has turned 90.
Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose and Nobel laureate and founder of the Grameen bank Muhammed Yunus are among the famous alumni of the university.
The Dhaka University Day was observed Friday with great enthusiasm among the teachers, students and officials, the Daily Star reported.
Hundreds of people took part in discussions, cultural events and competitions to mark the day. The campus was also illuminated with colourful lights.
A.K. Azad Chowdhury, chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission, said at a meeting that national development cannot be achieved without ensuring higher education.
He stressed the need for more budgetary allocation in education and research sectors in this age of globalisation.
University vice chancellor A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddique said the institution has contributed greatly to the country’s culture, politics and economy.
