Islamabad, Sep 1 (IANS) It will take some time for Pakistan to improve relations with the US, seriously strained after the Osama bin Laden killing, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said.

While Pakistan considers the US ‘an important country’ and seeks good relations with it, these should be based on mutual respect and equality, the Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Gilani as saying.

Speaking in Multan Wednesday, Gilani cited two reasons why US-Pakistan relations soured.

One was the killing of two Pakistanis by US undercover agent Raymond Davis in Lahore in February.

The other was the May 2 killing of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad by US commandos.

The Osama killing in particular plunged Pakistan-US relations to an all time low, with Islamabad dubbing the unilateral American operations as a violation of its sovereignty.

Gilani said Pakistan and the US were presently holding talks, but it would take some time for relations to improve.
