New Delhi, Sep 2 (IANS) Around eight percent of the high court and Supreme Court judges in India are women, Minister of Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said Friday.
In a reply to the Lok Sabha, the minister refuted a recent United Nations report which said that the proportion of women judges in India was a mere three percent.
‘The information provided by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law, has indicated that as on July 10, 2009, out of a total 649 judges in the Supreme Court and high courts, there are 51 female judges,’ Tirath said.
‘The proportion of female judges to the total, therefore, works out to 7.85 percent,’ she added.
