Chandigarh, July 2 (Inditop.com) In order to curb incidents of ragging, the Panjab University (PU) Thursday announced various steps, including forming of committees on the campus from the next academic session.

“We are committed to make PU campus totally ragging free. We will constitute separate committees for arts block, science block and engineering block to deter students from taking part in such activities,” Naval Kishore, dean of students’ welfare, told IANS Thursday.

“These committees will be regulated by a central committee and guilty students will be dealt with strictly. In hostels we would appoint senior students to keep an eye on any kind of ragging going on in the hostel premises,” he added.

In the last academic session, nearly 25 students were involved in ragging on PU campus. Half a dozen of them were expelled.

Kishore said: “Before taking admission, students have to fill an affidavit that they will not indulge in any kind of ragging or violent activity on campus and parents have to take the responsibility of their wards.”

From this session, PU authorities have also made it easier for the new students to complain if they face any kind of problem. They have decided to place a complaint box in every department of the varsity for freshers in which students can drop their complaints.

PU, one of the oldest universities of the country, was established in 1882 at Lahore and was shifted to Chandigarh in 1956.

The campus is spread in Sectors 14 and 25 of this union territory. There are over 10,000 students, of which 70 percent are girls, who study here in over 60 teaching and research departments.
