Beijing, Nov 2 (IANS) It is ‘completely unnecessary to worry too much about the current population’, said a Chinese daily. The world population crossed the seven billion mark Monday.

An article titled ‘7 billion mark no cause for alarm’ in the opinion section of Peoples Daily online said it was not known how many people the earth could really hold.

‘Therefore we must be highly aware of the population issue. However, it is completely unnecessary to worry too much about the current population,’ it said.

China is the world’s most populous country with 1.3 billion people.

The article appeared just days after Nargis, a girl born in a village in India’s Uttar Pradesh states, became the world’s seven billionth baby. A boy in Russia and a girl in the Philippines too are said to be the seven billionth babies.

The article, however, said the growth of the global population needed attention. ‘Population growth is a geometric growth, which is quite obscure.’

It said: ‘We do not know how many people the earth can really hold, and therefore we must be highly aware of the population issue. However, it is completely unnecessary to worry too much about the current population.’
