Ghaziabad, July 4 (Inditop.com) Barely 12 hours after Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee stressed safety measures in her rail budget, a passenger train collided with a static goods train in Ghaziabad late Friday. Twelve people were injured in the accident, officials said Saturday.

According to official sources, the Ambala-Saharanpur passenger train rammed into a goods train that had halted at a signal stop from behind in Vivekanand Nagar at about 12.20 a.m.

The impact of the collision could be heard in nearby localities, witnesses said.

The goods train guard Rajendra Kumar and passenger train driver Chandgi Ram suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital in Kavi Nagar where their condition is reportedly critical.

The other injured were admitted to M.G. Hospital.

A senior railway official said that an enquiry was being launched into the incident. “The incident appears to be a mistake in the signalling. We are checking who was at fault at the Rail Traffic Control,” the official said.
