Lucknow, Dec 2 (IANS) Six people, including a woman, working for a Bihar-based illegal firearms racket were arrested following a shootout in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district, police said Friday.

The smugglers, all in their mid-40s, were nabbed Thursday from Lisadigate area following a joint operation by the special operation group (SOG) and the district police.

‘Acting on a tip-off, when we intercepted a car, those inside it started firing at us indiscriminately. It was only half-an-hour of gunfight, we managed to nab the six people,’ police inspector Than Singh told reporters.

‘Investigations reveal the six used to smuggle illegal firearms manufactured in Bihar’s Munger to different states of the country, including Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh,’ he added.

According to police, six illegally manufactured firearms along with several cartridges were recovered from those arrested.
