Islamabad, Dec 3 (IANS) Tariq Khosa, former director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), has refused to head a panel formed to probe the memo-controversy that led to the resignation of the then ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani.
The supreme court Thursday asked Khosa to head the panel and also directed him to inform the court if he had prior engagements and could not make himself available for the task, so it can assign someone else. The court had also allowed him to take help from cyber-crime experts abroad, Geo TV reported Saturday.
Haqqani’s resignation Nov 22 came after Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz alleged that Haqqani took his help to deliver a secret message from President Asif Ali Zardari to the then top US military commander, Admiral Mike Mullen.
Ijaz alleged that Zardari had feared a military takeover after the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan May 2 and thus sought Mullen’s help in averting this.
On Nov 23, former minister Sherry Rehman was appointed Pakistan’s new ambassador to the US.
