New Delhi, July 7 (Inditop.com) Delhi Police Tuesday said they had arrested a man who snatched jewellery and purses from over 100 people, mainly women, and then bought property in the capital and adjoining areas. His accomplice is still on the run.
Shahnawaz Khan was caught in Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi on the basis of secret information, a senior police officer said. Khan was a resident of Chandni Mahal in Old Delhi but had shifted to Shakarpur, in east Delhi.
The arrest followed a number of incidents of robbery and snatching by motorcycle-borne men across the city, mainly in east, southeast Delhi and New Delhi areas, as well as neighbouring Ghaziabad and Noida.
“A search was conducted in Shakarpur area and we located the motorcycle used in the crimes. But Khan escaped,” the officer said. He was eventually arrested July 5 near a nursing home in Shakarpur.
The police are now looking for his accomplice, Ashiq Ali.
“Khan revealed that he and Ashiq Ali used to target women travelling in auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws. They used to stop these vehicles on some pretext and then threaten them with weapons and rob them,” said the police officer. “They also targetted women walking alone.”
