Islamabad, Jan 29 (IANS) The World Health Organisation (WHO) has assured Pakistan of its full support in eradicating diseases like polio, hepatitis and dengue.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani met WHO Director-General Margaret Chan in Davos, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, and told her dengue was a serious threat for his countrymen.
According to a UN report, more than 12,000 cases of dengue and 125 deaths linked to the disease were reported till September 2011 across Pakistan, with the majority in Punjab province.
In 2010, there were 11,024 confirmed cases of dengue and 40 deaths.
Gilani said he was appreciative of the support extended by WHO to Pakistan whenever a natural calamity struck the country, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
The prime minister urged the WHO chief to consider the possibility of establishing a WHO dengue collaborative centre at the National Institute of Health at Islamabad.
