Kabul, Jan 29 (IANS) Fifty militants from the Hezb-i-Islami outfit have surrendered to the Afghan government, Xinhua reported.
The militants surrendered in Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the northern province of Baghlan late Saturday, provincial police chief Asadullah Shirzad said Sunday.
Hezb-i-Islami led by former prime minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is one of the largest militant groups fighting the government.
Shirzad said more than 100 militants, with a majority of them Taliban, have joined the peace process in the province, around 160 km north of Kabul.
Media reports say peace talks between the government and Hezb-i-Islami was heading towards a positive direction.
President Hamid Karzai said Jan 21 that he had recently held talks with a Hezb-i-Islami delegation.
