Chandigarh, Jan 29 (IANS) With Punjab set to vote Monday, the Election Commission said Sunday Rs.33.66 crore of unaccounted cash and 697,000 bottles of country liquor have been seized in the state.
Election Commission officials here said that nearly 32,000 litres of illicit liquor and over 227,588 kgs of ‘Lahan’ (local liquor) were recovered in the past nearly five weeks.
The drugs seizure included over 23 kg of heroin, 2,641 kg of poppy husk, 99 kgs of opium, 952,697 tablets, 88,296 capsules and 4,362 bottles of syrups.
In all, 213,352 licenced weapons were deposited with the authorities by their owners. “These are 80 percent of the licenced weapons in the state,” an official said here.
Over 73,000 security personnel have been deployed for Monday’s polling. Nearly 86,400 election staff, including security personnel, will be on duty.
