Bangalore, Jan 31 (IANS) Swedish commercial vehicle maker Scania Tuesday said it is setting up a manufacturing plant near here with an investment of Rs.150 crore.
The plant, the Scania Regional Product Centre, in Narasapura Industrial Area, 40 kms east of Bangalore, will start production early next year, Managing Director of Scania Commercial Vehicles India Henrik Fagrenius said in a statement.
It will be the centre of the company’s commercial operations in the country and employ about 800 people.
“Scania’s ambition is to sell about 2,000 trucks, 1,000 buses and 1,500 engines per year in the Indian market within the next five years,” Fagrenius said.
Scania set up the India unit last year.
“We will concentrate on broadening our existing offering of trucks to the mining industry but also in other areas of the construction segment, as well as trucks for heavy special-purpose road transport. In the bus segment, we see potential for sales of buses and coaches, both for city traffic and long-distance intercity services,” Fagrenius said.
