London, Feb 1 (IANS) The British Royal Navy will deploy a warship near the disputed territory of Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic.

The islands, off Argentina’s eastern coast, has been under British control since 1833. Britain defeated Argentina in a war in 1982 over the sovereignty of the islands.
The destroyer, HMS Dauntless, will be deployed near the Falkland Islands, also called the Malvinas Islands by Argentina, Xinhua reported.
The vessel is equipped with anti-aircraft weapons.
The navy “has had a continuous presence in the South Atlantic for many years” and “it’s a routine deployment,” a spokesman of British defence ministry said.
Argentina responded to the British decision, saying it “rejects the British intent to militarize a conflict” and will “follow all the necessary steps” to guarantee security.
