Gandhinagar, July 8 (Inditop.com) Gujarat Assembly Speaker Ashok Bhatt Wednesday suspended 10 legislators of the opposition Congress for disrupting the proceedings of the house as they protested the illicit liquor tragedy in Ahmedabad that claimed 27 lives.

The opposition raised protests and several Congress members rushed to the well of the house demanding the resignation of Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, who was making a statement on the action being taken in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The home portfolio is held by Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The suspended legislators were forcibly removed from the house by the marshals.

Gujarat Congress spokesperson Arjun Modhvadia later told reporters that the state government had been unable to break the police-bootlegger nexus, leading to the tragedy in Ahmedabad Tuesday.

“We demand the home minister’s resignation immediately,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government ordered the suspension of two police inspectors in-charge of the Sagrapitha locality, where the tragedy took place.

Shah earlier ordered action against a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in-charge of the area that includes Sagrapitha.

Sale and consumption of alcohol is banned across Gujarat.

Congress workers and activists of NGOs held protests in Ahmedabad city.
