Colombo, March 1 (IANS) The US Thursday expressed concern over the “disorderly protests” and the disruption of the opening of parliament in the Maldives by foes of new President Mohamed Waheed.
“We have welcomed the efforts of all sides to participate in a dialogue on a democratization process that could create the conditions for early elections,” an American embassy statement here said.
“The US encourages all parties to continue to work collaboratively and peacefully toward a solution as agreed with the roadmap document, and not allow violence to further complicate the situation,” it said.
“The US will continue to support the Maldives in this process, and we stand ready to provide technical assistance on elections.
“In the interests of all Maldivians, we urge the parties to work together in a constructive and cooperative manner to reach agreement.”
The statement followed fresh protests in Male by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Nasheed against his successor.
The two sides have been at loggerhead since Nasheed was forced to step down Feb 7 following mass protests, including by section of policemen, for which he blamed Waheed and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
