London, March 1 (IANS) A parrot in Britain managed to scare off intruders by mimicking the sound of an alarm after they tried to break into her owner’s pub, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.
Fizzy Winkle, 14, screeched out a siren noise sending the crooks into a flap as they tried to smash their way into the property.
Landlord David Heafield, 49, heard a commotion from his flat above the George pub in Fenstanton, Cambridge, followed by piercing squawking from his distressed pet.
When he went downstairs he discovered cash from the fruit machine abandoned on the floor.
He said: “They went to all the trouble of breaking in, but they didn’t get any of the money. They must have been disturbed by Fizzy and made a run for it.”
David, and wife Joanne, 53, have one daughter Victoria, 22, who lives in London.
They decided to rescue Fizzy from an elderly neighbour who wasn’t able to look after her.
The articulate bird is a hit with locals who adore her quirky catch phrases.
The attempted night-time robbery took place Feb 21 after a string of similar break-ins at local businesses.
