Mumbai, July 9 (Inditop.com) Tata Steel subsidiary Corus, Europe’s second largest steelmaker, Thursday announced plans to cut a further 366 jobs at its site in Scunthorpe, Britain.
The move aims “to improve the competitiveness of its (Corus’) Scunthorpe site in Northeast England by aligning employment cost with anticipated steel demand. As a result, 366 jobs are identified as being at risk,” Tata Steel said in statement here.
The announcement comes a month after Corus said it would retrench more than 2,000 people.
Of the total expected job losses, some 1,500 are in the company’s production facilities, including 800 at the engineering steels sites, 370 in Corus Tubes in Britain and the Netherlands and about 375 at downstream rolling and finishing plants in Teesside and Scotland.
Corus will also open consultations on 500 white-collar jobs in the Corus long products division at Scunthorpe.
“Consultations with employees and their representatives have begun on the Scunthorpe site today (Thursday),” it said.
“Wherever possible the company will seek voluntary redundancies, while at the same time ensuring that critical skills are retained. Support packages will be available to those leaving the company.”
