New Delhi, July 9 (Inditop.com) Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan Thursday said that the government does not intervene in the functioning of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after handing over a case to the agency.
“The government does not intervene in the functioning of CBI after cases have been handed over,” Chavan told parliament in a written reply to a question.
The opposition has often accused Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of intervening in the CBI’s functioning and misusing it for political gains. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had even dubbed the CBI as the “Congress Bureau of Investigation”.
The minister informed parliament that the government has given 117 cases to CBI in the last three years – 23 in 2006, 43 in 2007 and 51 in 2008. Of those 117, the agency has completed investigations in 77 cases while it is pending in 40 cases.
“It is very difficult to quantify the amount spent on an individual case as the amount is spent by the organisation as a whole,” Chavan added.
