New Delhi, July 10 (Inditop.com) Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi Friday termed the controversy over decriminalisation of homosexuality as an “elitist issue”, and said “the poor are not concerned with it”.

“This is a non-issue. This is a country of poor people and this issue is being raked up by the elite,” Ravi told a television channel at parliament premises.

The Delhi High Court had read down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, ruling that consensual homosexual act between adults was not a criminal act.

After that, the Supreme Court was approached by individuals against the court judgement. The apex court has sent notices to the central and Delhi governments.

“It concerns only the elite, so we are not bothered. The government will decide when to reply but as far as I am concerned this is an issue of the elite with which we do not agree,” Ravi said.
